The first 48 hours

What to do, hour by hour

SJ Group International Readiness Brief: The first 48 hours, what to do, hour by hour

Would you know what to do if the worst call came? Here is what the first two days should look like.

Hour 1: Stop and steady

  • Write down every word, time and number

  • Don't pay, promise or agree to anything

  • Keep the phone charged and the line free

  • Call the police and your crisis adviser

Hours 1 to 6: Close the circle

  • Tell only the people who need to know

  • Go silent on social media, all of you

  • Choose one voice for the family

  • Keep every message, email and call log

Hours 6 to 24: Get organised

  • Set up a small family crisis team

  • Give each person one clear role

  • Check the rest of the family is safe

  • Sleep in shifts, adrenaline runs out

Hours 24 to 48: Settle in

  • Expect it to take longer than you hope

  • Stick to the plan, it may adapt as things change

  • Tune out outside advice, however well meant

  • Look after the people who are waiting

Remember: One voice, one plan, one record.
