Virtual kidnap

The call that says someone you love has been taken

SJ Group International Readiness Brief: Virtual kidnap, the call that says someone you love has been taken

Often, nobody has been taken at all. Virtual kidnap relies on panic, speed and what is already public about your family.

The warning signs

  • Crying or screaming in the background, so you cannot think straight

  • Pressure to stay on the line and not hang up

  • Told to tell no one, especially the police

  • Urgent payment by transfer, crypto or gift cards

  • The caller knows a few details, usually found online

What to do

  1. Stay as calm as you can and slow the call down

  2. Try to reach your loved one from another phone

  3. Ask for your family code word

  4. Do not send money

  5. Note the number, time and what was said, then call the police and your adviser

Remember: Most of these calls are a bluff. Treat every one seriously anyway.
